Learning Spanish

In the United States, Spanish is probably the most common second language you will run into. In some regions of the country this may not be true (The northeast states bordering Canada may get a bit more exposure to French.) It is for this reason that Spanish is probably the most popular language to study in the United States. Our High School offered classes in Spanish and French. I studied Spanish for two years. Our instructor was from Argentina (we picked up a bit of an accent from him.) His other responsibility at the school was soccer coach.

In two years of study we had a fairly low level of understanding of the language. Present tense verb conjugations and a modest vocabulary, but next to no reading skills and listening … yikes the videos that we saw (recorded from satellite) may as well have been in yet another language because the pace was so quick we couldn’t even pick up on the words that we knew.

I have returned to study the Spanish language again though in the last 5 years I’ve spent a good amount of time reading and listening and studying. If you’re just starting out you may be interested in how to learn Spanish for Beginners.

One of the good points of Spanish that makes it a fairly easy language to study is that pronunciation is fairly straightforward. There are slight variations in pronouncing some characters (c and ll for instance), but for the most part the rules of pronunciation are simple and there aren’t as many exceptions and alterations as in English. So… when reading it’s easy to know how a word is pronounced. (In fact from what I’ve seen, there aren’t typically pronunciation guides in Spanish dictionaries as they exist in English language dictionaries.) This also makes it easy to pick up words from conversation and have a good idea of how they are spelled (to look them up and find their meaning.)
