Learning Mandarin Chinese

I visited Hong Kong some years back, before the handover from British authority back to China. Of course, there they primarily spoke Cantonese. At that time I learned a few phrases in Cantonese and was generally overwhelmed by the written language. (Although there were a few common symbols that I came to recognize easily.) A year or so ago my brother made a trip to China and I guess this renewed my interest somewhat in the language. I ordered a book on written Chinese that was an introduction to some of the characters. It was very interesting and surprisingly easy to start spotting those characters in other contexts. Although there are 50,000 or so Chinese characters they say that only 5,000 or so is required for literacy enough to read a newspaper.

My interest flagged somewhere along there only to be renewed again during the 2008 olympics. I don’t know if I’ll ever make it a priority to REALLY sit down and learn Chinese, but I would like to know a smattering.
