Learning French
French is the third most widely spoken language in the United States after English and Spanish. Like Spanish it is a Romance language meaning that it is descended from Latin and much of the core vocabulary has similarities. Unfortunately for the student, the orthography (pronunciation from the written language) can be a bit more difficult than other Romance languages.
There are at least 65 million native French speakers in the world and as many as 500 million that speak French as a first or second language.
Many DVDs distributed in the United States and Canada share English and French language tracks (or at least subtitling). Also, many products destined for distribution in the United States and Canada have English and French packaging information (instructions, labelling, etc.) because English and French are both required for products distributed in Canada.
Typically French is considered one of the more pleasing languages to the ear (although that is quite subjective….) It is also an official language of the UN, and is commonly used as a second language in many areas that were former French colonies.
