Learning Arabic

Arabic is spoken by a large number of people throughout the world. One of the most obvious obstacles to many newcomers to studying Arabic is the alphabet. It is spoken in large part throughout the Middle East and much of North Africa. It’s somewhat of a misnomer to think of the Arabic Language as a monolithic language though. There are many that consider Arabic a macrolanguage with 27 sub-languages. It is the official language of 35 countries.

The most widely understood branch or dialect of Arabic is Egyptian Arabic which is spoken by around 76 million native speakers. Next is Maghrebi Arabic which includes Morroco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. This dialect is spoken by around 60 million people, but is not understood by Arabic speakers to the East. Levantine Arabic is spoken by around 30 million people in Syria, Jordan, the Palestinian territories and Lebanon. Gulf Arabic is spoken by about 34 million people in the Gulf states and parts of Saudi Arabia.

Even though there are distinct differences among the different Arabic dialects Egyptian Arabic is fairly widely understood throughout the Arabic speaking world due in large part to the prominence of Egyptian based media in the region.
